Sometimes you get lucky and the universe lets you meet two good quality people in one day! Today (Wednesday 10/7) I got lucky. I was sleeping in a bit late since I had to catch a flight to Switzerland at 1pm. I left the house to get some last minute items for this trip. As I arrived home, I find this attractive blond gal sitting with my mom in the kitchen discussing windows and gutters (my mom's place needs some improvements). First off, it's somewhat rare to find a girl in the windows/gutter installation business out at a customer's house. Most of the time, it’s the middle-aged man coming out to inspect, measure, and give an estimate, and more than likely it’s the owner himself. But the owner sent Gina out. The owner is smart!
Ha... this is a funny sight. This gal can't use her looks on my mom... no way. My mom is too smart (even with limited English) to get fooled even by a middle-aged man trying to sell her with technical jargons. But to get a better understanding on things, I better go and introduce myself to the rep and learn about her product and the company. After a short 3 minute conversation it was evident that Gina knew her product (technical), knew her market, and knew the concerns of her customer very well. She was proud of the company she represented! It showed in her presentation and professionalism... all this within a short period of time. Our conversation then pivoted into something more personal. What I was about to find out simply was inspirational indeed.
Gina has been working for this company for roughly 3 years, she has one son at the University of Washington (go Huskies) on two different scholarships. She is a single mother. Her husband was taken away from her after a tragic car accident years back. Hearing all this, it’s really cool to have a single parent doing well for herself and raising a good kid. ! It elevates to another level when I come to find that Gina was an orphan around the age of 13 -- after her parents were also killed in a car accident. Needless to say, Gina has had her fair share of challenges and obstacles.
OK… so you know what makes Gina's story even COOLER? Her adopted family, after her parents passed away, is a Vietnamese and Philippine couple – yes, she was adopted by an Asian family. Not that skin color or culture has anything to do with it... it has to do with the love of her parents to share her to their best friends whom they love and trust (who just happens to be an Asian couple). Gina showed me a few pictures of an all Asian family and one blond gal in the mix - very cute picture. Her parents recognize love & compassion first... everything else takes a back seat. Gina exemplifies strength, forgiveness, resiliency, and courage – what a gift to have! This gift has inspired me today.
So my Uber driver comes to the front door, I hug my mom good-bye, and then gave Gina a hug and asked the Uber driver to come out into the rain and take a few pictures of the three of us :-). The Uber guy was really cool to do that! You remember as I said above... I was given two gifts today! Read the next blog to find out more…
